In an email received this morning, Karen King shares this new information about a pending dediction for our dear departed classmate, Frank DelOlmo:
Dear Family/Friends/Colleagues:
It's official. Last night, the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education approved the name for the newly constructed school currently known as Belmont New Elementary #6.
It's now going to be called Frank del Olmo Elementary School. District officials have informed me that it marks the first time an LAUSD school has been named for an LA Times journalist.
You are invited to the Naming Ceremony, which will be held at the school, Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. at 100 N. New Hampshire Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90004.
Elected officials and the Mayor of Los Angeles have been invited to participate in the ceremony. LAUSD School Board Member Monica Garcia, in whose district the school is located, will serve as the emcee. The principal, Eugene Hernandez, will present a performance by the children of the school. And, acclaimed artist Richard Duardo, of Chicano Visions fame, has been commissioned to do a portrait of Frank that will hang at the school.
